DECam Safety Precautions

Effective November 2012 to present

(latest revision Feb 6 2020 ARW)

It is possible to damage DECam with light, take these instructions seriously.  You do not want to be the person who killed the next CCD.

  1. Twilight sky flats (evening or dawn) are forbidden.
  2. On-sky observing will start no earlier Sun altitude = -10 degrees and will finish no later than altitude = -10 degrees. The telescope operator will advise the astronomer of these times, but they can be easily found by running kentools "ephem".
  3. Before the dome is opened, at any day time between the above limits, the person opening the dome will check on the DECam GUIs whether VSUB is OFF and the block filter (a two-filter combination) is in the beam.  Examples of when this check woukd be done include opening the dome to allow the telescope dome to ventilate prior to observing, and opening the lateral doors when extra light is needed in the dome for daytime work.
  4. Before turning on the lights in the dome, check that no calibrations are underway and that the shutter is closed and VSUB is OFF.
  5. Please use the "Calibrations warning signs" on the console and in the elevator. We normally only do afternoon calibrations, and since the calibrations are very stable day to day missing out a day is no big deal.   No calibrations are run in the morning.
  6. DECam is protected by external photodiodes that prevent the shutter being opened when the ambient is too bright. There are also photodiodes on the focal plane that will cut power to the CCDs if the illumination is too bright. Finally, DECam will not allow you to take an exposure (open the shutter) if you are closer than 10 degrees to the Moon.

______________________________________________________

  1. Los flats de cielo están prohibidos.
